With thirty-two years of experience in sales tax, property tax, and tax incentive programs, Brent Watson, CPA, of SALTA, PLLC, is an Avalara sales tax software implementation partner. He launched and led the non-income tax group at Tyson Foods for ten years and has fifteen years of consulting experience across various industries, including manufacturing, oil and gas, construction, and multi-state retailing.
Brent frequently speaks at professional organizations and has authored numerous articles for OSCPA Focus and COPAS Accounts magazines. He is a member of the Institute for Professionals in Taxation, Oklahoma Society of Certified Public Accountants, and the Tulsa Chapter of the Oklahoma Society.
OSCPA: What will members take away from your Lunch + Learn session?
Watson: Oklahoma provides powerful incentives to help businesses move to Oklahoma or expand operations here. These incentives can make the expansion possible and help the business grow as a result of the investment.
OSCPA: What’s one thing about Oklahoma tax incentives you think people overlook?
Watson: Many businesses qualify for either the Business Expansion Incentive Program, which provides reimbursement of a large portion of expansions, or the Quality Jobs Program, which provides rebates of additional wages of up to 5% for 10 years. These major benefits, along with the 5-year ad valorem tax exemption for manufacturing equipment, are often missed. Smaller companies often qualify for the Small Employer Quality Jobs Program of the Oklahoma Expansion Incentive Program (”OEIP”).
OSCPA: How did you become an expert in Oklahoma sales tax and tax incentives?
Watson: I began performing both sales tax and tax incentive work at Tyson Foods in 1990. Tyson previously had no one managing these functions, so I was blessed with the opportunity of “on-the-job training” resulting in savings of millions of dollars for Tyson and a rewarding career for me.
