Building a Resilient Future for the Profession by Designating Accounting as a STEM Profession
December 02, 2024
As we prepare for the 2025 legislative session beginning in January, it's crucial to advocate for recognizing accounting as a STEM field. This recognition will help ensure future generations of CPAs are equipped with vital skills like data analysis and critical thinking—abilities that 99% of accounting firms already find essential for new hires.
STEM designation can also broaden the appeal of the profession to diverse students and set them on a path to success. STEM jobs are projected to grow by 10.8% by 2032, outpacing non-STEM roles, and typically offer nearly double the earnings.
Investing in STEM strengthens the talent pipeline, fosters innovation, and boosts economic opportunity. We encourage OSCPA members to support this effort by contacting your U.S. senators or congressional representatives to back bipartisan bills advancing this important initiative. Here’s how:
- Visit www.congress.gov/members to find your senators’ and representatives’ contact information.
- Check the House bill (H.R. 3541) and Senate bill (S. 1705) to see if your members of Congress have already signed on as co-sponsors.
- Use these templated letters to send an email via their congressional website.
Together, we can help introduce more students to a rewarding career in accounting and finance.
