SB 171 signed into law, reducing barriers to meet Oklahoma’s demand for CPAs

OKLAHOMA CITY — On Wednesday, April 19, 2023, Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt signed SB 171 into law, which aims to lessen the barriers that hinder Oklahoma from meeting the current and future demands for qualified CPAs in the workforce.
The Bill modernizes the process to sit for the CPA Examination in the state by allowing accounting graduates to take the CPA Exam during their post-graduate studies.
SB 171 places Oklahoma CPA candidates on equal footing with other states who already provide a streamlined pathway to a career in the CPA profession.
The Oklahoma Society of Certified Public Accountants (OSCPA) is in support of SB 171—especially as it pertains to commitment to workforce development and attempts to reduce barriers for candidates who seek licensure in Oklahoma to practice accounting.
“As businesses and individuals continue to navigate a complex financial landscape, the demand for skilled CPAs has never been greater,” said OSCPA President and CEO Blaine Peterson, CPA. “Oklahoma must keep up with this demand, as it is crucial in strengthening the quality of our workforce.”
CPA candidates must still complete the full 150 academic hours for CPA licensure in Oklahoma as in the case in each of the other 50 states. Adhering to the Uniform Accountancy Act 150-hour requirement provides Oklahoma CPAs with practice mobility—or the privilege to practice in all other states without having to obtain an additional license to practice.
“The OSCPA is committed to growing the CPA workforce in Oklahoma while continuing to protect CPA mobility and substantial equivalency for Oklahoma CPAs,” said Peterson.
Gov. Stitt also signed SB 170 and SB 172 into law. SB 170 ensures CPAs are properly positioned to perform audit and attest services for developing engagement services such as cybersecurity audits and related services. SB 172 reduces barriers for CPA firms to practice accounting through firm mobility in Oklahoma.
All three bills were authored by Sen. Tom Dugger, CPA, and Rep. Gerrid Kendrix, CPA, both members of the OSCPA.
