Oklahoma Tax Commission Warns of Fraudulent Text Message Scam

October 14, 2025

The Oklahoma Tax Commission (OTC) is warning taxpayers about fraudulent text messages that falsely claim a tax refund has been approved and request personal or banking information to process payment.

The scam message states that a "tax refund request has been processed and approved" and directs recipients to click a link or reply to provide payment information. These messages are not from the OTC.

“The OTC will never send unsolicited text messages asking taxpayers to provide personal data, banking details, or payment information,” said OTC Executive Director Doug Linehan, CPA. “Anyone who receives such a message should not click on any links or respond.”

Taxpayers who receive suspicious messages are urged to delete them immediately and to avoid sharing any personal or financial information. Those who may have provided information through one of these fraudulent links should contact their financial institution and report the incident to the Oklahoma Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Unit.
