Position: VP of Finance

The Vice President of Finance (VP of Finance) is a key member of the executive leadership team, responsible for the financial integrity, strategic financial planning, and overall fiscal management of the community foundation. The VP of Finance ensures that the foundation operates with sound financial practices, aligns resources with the organization’s mission, and complies with all regulatory requirements. This role serves as a liaison to the audit committee and is responsible for ongoing communication with and support of this volunteer group.

Supervisory Responsibilities

• Oversee the Finance and Accounting function.

• Responsible for hiring and conducting performance evaluations.

• Hold team members accountable through developing and coaching aligned to company policies.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Financial Strategy and Planning:

• Strategic Financial Leadership: Provide financial leadership in the development and implementation of the foundation’s strategic fiscal plan, ensuring alignment with the Foundation’s mission and goals.

• Performance Reporting: Monitors and advises the COO & CEO and staff leadership regarding key financial performance indicators.

• Budgeting and Forecasting: Oversee the development and management of the annual budget, long-term financial forecasts, and financial models to guide the foundation’s growth and sustainability.

• Audit Oversight: Collaborate with the Audit Committee and external audit firm to conduct the annual audit process, address audit findings and implement best practices to uphold the integrity of the financial operations.

• Financial Analysis: Conduct financial analyses to support fund endowment management, fee and revenue modeling, grant-making strategy, and operational sustainability.

Financial Operations:

• Accounting and Reporting: Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting, including monthly financial statements, annual audits, and tax filings.

• Cash Flow Management: Monitor cash flow to meet operational needs while optimizing investment opportunities.

• Internal Controls: Consistently verify strong internal controls are in place to safeguard assets, ensure the accuracy of financial records, and prevent fraud.

• Compliance: Maintains technical skills necessary to ensure compliance with emerging regulations, accepted nonprofit accounting principles, and reporting standards.

Philanthropic Support:

• Donor Relations: Collaborate with the development team to support donor stewardship by providing financial information and insights related to donor-advised funds, endowments, and other philanthropic vehicles.

Leadership and Collaboration:

• Team Leadership: Lead, mentor, and develop the finance and accounting team, fostering a culture of excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.

• Executive Partnership: Work closely with the COO, CEO, Board of Trustees, and other senior leaders to provide financial insights that support sound, data-based decision-making.

• Peer Collaboration: Ensures a supportive and collaborative relationship with all leadership team members and prioritizes collaboration with VP of Administration on cross functional activities such as investments and VP of Philanthropic Services on donor-centric approach.

• Lead with optimism: Foster a positive, solutions-first culture that inspires confidence and resilience across teams.

• Board Reporting: Present financial reports and updates to the Board of Trustees and Audit Committee, ensuring transparency and clear communication of financial status.

• External Engagement: Actively engages and participates in local and national organizations focused on nonprofit management and financial matters.

• Contributes to the management team, embraces operational changes with a positive approach, actively contributes to our cultural initiatives, and supports the development of a resilient and agile team.

• Strong team builder, able to attract, develop and retain talented team members and unite the team in reaching Foundation objectives.

• Through open communication and active listening, contributes to an organizational culture where every team member feels valued and supported.

• Understands trends in the philanthropic field and works with internal partners to select and apply practices that advance the Foundation’s mission.

Qualifications & Skills:

• Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field is required

• Master of Business Administration or Certified Public Accountant license, preferred.

• Experience: Minimum of 15 years of experience in finance or accounting, with demonstrated progressive leadership roles, preferably within a nonprofit or philanthropic organization. Community Foundation experience a plus.

• Knowledge: Strong understanding of nonprofit accounting standards (GAAP), investment management, and regulatory compliance for charitable organizations.

• Skills: Exceptional analytical, strategic thinking, and financial management skills. Proficiency in financial software, such as QuickBooks, Blackbaud, or similar systems.

• Leadership: Proven ability to lead, motivate, and manage a team, with a collaborative and inclusive leadership style.

• Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders.

• Extended periods of working with a computer, requiring the ability to focus on tasks and navigate software interfaces

• Requires fine motor skills, including using touch, pinch, or prick, primarily with fingers involving precision and dexterity for tasks such as typing, clicking and manipulating small objects

• Strong visual acuity is essential for reading information on a computer screen and discerning details

• The work environment is an office setting with moderate noise

• Minimal travel in the metro and surrounding area as needed
